Yahoo India’s Cricket world cup page has everything you need for cricket world cup starting from News, columns, scorecard, sports blog and even Sunil Gavaskar but don’t go by their Cricket world cup schedule otherwise you will be stumped.

The World Cup schedule which can be downloaded as wallpaper is completely messed up. Some key matches are missing (eg. India Vs Sri Lanka) and team flags are wrong (South Africa and Pakistan have same flags). :-)

Rediffmail (The lightning fast email) is now offering free unlimited storage for their registered users. Users can store their files, Videos and MP3s for free without worrying about the storage space.

The unlimited storage feature is very enticing, however, I don’t think this feature would be deciding factor while opting for free email service. I abandoned my Rediffmail after opting Gmail some two years back, as Rediffmail did not have search mail feature then. Also, Rediff sends you at least 10 promotional emails daily, that's irritating . But hey, unlimited free space is not a bad deal!!

Rediff is now focusing completely on Indian email and chat users. Their Rediffmail TV ad which takes on Yahoo! and their messenger RediffBol’s TV ad are interesting. They have AJAXified their email interface, have introduced a new Question and Answer section and a lot more..

Third Season of Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC) is starting with the new host, Shahrukh Khan. I must say the promo ad of KBC is simply superb. Starting from the idea, execution and cast, everything is just great. The punch line of program is also very powerful, Kuchh sawal aapki zindagi badal sakte hain, Aapki zindagi kis sawal se badlegi? The KBC2 promo ads featuring Amitabh bachchan were also a big hit. Remember those three rap songs, sung by Amitabh?? Aaj bhi hain pakde yeh ummeed ki dori, Don't lose hope is the moral of the story

After the Happy Dent gum ad this is the second ad which is unusual in concept and good too. Both ads worth a watch!!

The good time of watching cricket with real experts is back. We have seen Fourth umpire on DD, extraaaa innings, Cricket weds Entertainment and what not. Now, starting today, the India, South Africa Cricket series will be broadcasted on ESPN. We will now be watching known faces of Cricket including Harsha Bhogle, Sunil Gavaskar and Ravi Shashtri, moreover, an overall good real Cricket show.

In ICC champions trophy, the analysis show (if I can use that word) used to start well before two hours. The show had everything, from prediction of the match winner through tarot card reading to interviews of Abhishek bachchan and Aishwarya rai to silly comments from Mandira Bedi but what show lacked was Cricket, the real cricket talks. I am horrified by the thought that SET MAX has TV rights for the next Cricket World cup and we have to tolerate the wedding of cricket and entertainment. Oh God! I pray for the divorce!!!!

Guruji.com is a new Indian search engine which promises to show you India specific results. Guruji is a brain child of two IIT graduates got seed capital of $7 Million from Sequoia Capital. You can search for India specific web results as well as local search for restaurants, gyms, doctors and many other things. Currently Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bangalore, Pune, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Indore, Noida, Mysore, Ludhiana, Mangalore and Vadodara are covered for local search. Guruji.com has also tie up with Infomedia yellow pages for local results. Guruji plans to roll out Google like ads in near future for revenues.

The site has clean look and provides you relevant results. However, it's too early to compare Guruji with Google or Baidu. I miss the “did you mean?” feature very badly on Guruji. If you search for Pizzahut in Mumbai you get no result, however, when you search for Pizza hut in Mumbai (notice the space between pizza hut) you get all the result. I think the search engine will improve and new features will be added as the time goes by but the start is very impressive. Don’t forget to search guruji on Guruji.com .;-)

Mumbai, the financial capital of India is one of the costliest cities in India to live in. It's getting dearer day by day. Forget about owning a flat, you have to shell out a lot of money to get a rented accommodation.

In Mumbai, if you are looking for a flat, there is no way you can find one without a real estate broker. Moreover, the owner will ask for a hefty security deposit. The deposit could be anywhere from Rs. 50,000 to 200,000. You will also have to pay 1.5 month’s rent as the brokerage plus paper work charges. Most of the time, you are not given any receipt of this brokerage fees. The agreement between you and landlord is made for 11 months. After 11 months, you will have to renew the agreement and also have to pay the broker once again 1.5 Month’s rental as his FEES for nothing. If you ask for the receipt of this brokerage, you will never get it. If you question the broker why he is asking for brokerage again the answer is “I am not the only one who is charging brokerage once again, you can ask any broker and this is the practice we follow.”

So, real estate broker in Mumbai earns through this ROYALTY every year. Now, you know when you land up in Mumbai after joining a new company or a job, you must have at least Rs. 100,000 in order to get a decent accommodation and be ready to pay royalty to the broker after 11 months.

Google calendar notification SMS now in India

SMS notification from Google Calendar is now available in India and that too FREE. As of now, only two Mobile Operators Hutch and Airtel are supported, may be more mobile operators would be added soon.

You need to go to settings in Google calendar and then have to give your mobile number and choose your mobile operator. You will receive an SMS with a verification code. Just submit your verification code and Voila!!!! you will now receive reminder notification through SMS, but do not forget to check the SMS box in order to get reminder notification.

When you receive verification SMS, it says " standard charges apply for each SMS" but you need not to worry because as par google Calendar FAQs, your mobile service provider's standard rate for receiving text messages will apply. We are not charged for receiving SMS, so it seems that it's FREE service.

Today, 24th September, is World Heart Day. I usually do not believe in philosophy of these days as we have day for every reason be it rose day, hug day, kiss day, chocolate day and what not. However, There were these ads by Saffola which drew my attention for World Heart Day. I think these ads will at least make you think about your heart, even I have started taking stairs to my office which is on 6th floor.

We all have a heap of reasons to not to walk or exercise, however, there is very little needed to keep your heart fit. According to Dr. Taraneh Razavi, a google doctor, it takes only 2.5 hours of walking per week to keep your heart healthy. So, forget all the reasons and walk for your heart and keep your heart young.

Professor Chaturvedi had used two different electrodes of aluminium and copper, acid and also phosphorus that are present in most of the vegetables for generating electricity.

Go Mahabaleshwar!

A trip to hill station always rejuvenates you, more so when the hill station is like Mahabaleshwar.

Mahabaleshwar is a lovely place to visit because A. There are no water woes like Shimla rather you have plenty of water falls. B. Less crowd in off season or rainy season :-) C. Less commercialization as compare to other hill stations like Shimla and Mussoorie.

So here are my suggestions if you are going to Mahabaleshwar.
-> Don’t get into the trap of taxi men and their philosophy of points. Try to explore on your own. If you have your own vehicle then it’s great
-> Try to go in off season i.e. Aug-Sep as this is the season when rains are on, tourists are less and you will see greenery everywhere.
-> DO NOT FORGET to carry your rainwear.

The recent ban on blogs by Indian government helped blogs gain popularity and more people know about blogs. Amit Agarwal recently got interviewed on CNN-IBN. Let me tell you, CNN-IBN has been blog conscious since it's inception. They have a dedicated blog section on there website where most of there journalists blog, including Rajdeep Sardesai.

Now, If CNN-IBN has this blog section, then NDTV is not lagging far behind. They have come up with a complete blog site NDTVblogs where you can create a blog and start publishing your views. The look of site is not very cool and you don't have much to choose from. But you can hope for more as this is in beta stage and new things might be added soon.

New look for my blog

Music has power; it heels people and releases tension. Miyan Tansen made miracles such as bringing rain and fire through his raag Megh Malhar and raag Deepak.

Now, this power seems to be in Himesh Reshammiya's music or his voice only. According to Star News, in Bhalej villege of Anand in Gujrat, people have banned singing or even playing Himesh's hit song Jhalak dikhla ja. The reason is not that people do not like his voice like many others but whenever somebody tries to sing this song, a soul enters his body.

I think even ghosts' loves his music and voice or may be they can't tolerate the torture of his voice. What's your take? ;-)

It has been more than six months I am here in Mumbai. So, here are some of my observations about Mumbai.

People in Mumbai are more cool and calm than Delhi.

In Mumbai, theaters play National anthem before starting of a film.

People may call you by making a special(?) sound chhi chhi , that irritates me sometime.

You will see more south Indians in Mumbai, while in Delhi there are more Bengalis.

Mumbai’s traffic is a nightmare, however, Delhi is a smooth ride.

Mumbai's autowallahs will always charge by meter, however, in Delhi you can settle the fare without fare meter.

In Delhi, autorickshaw fare meter records units only when the auto is running, however, in Mumbai, the fare meter will record units when it's standing also.

Ladies are privileged here because they have special ladies only buses.

Find your invisible buddy

Find out if your friend is really offline or pretending to be offline. If your friend is logged in Yahoo Messenger as invisible, you can find him out by using any of these methods.

First Method: Doodle Method

Double Click on the user whose status you want to check.
A message window will open.
Click IMVironment button, select See all IMVironments, select Yahoo! Tools or Interactive Fun, and click on Doodle.
The last step and the most important step. After loading the Doodle IMVironment, there will be two possibilities.

a) If the user is offline, the Doodle area will show "waiting for your friend to load Doodle" continuously.

b) If the user is online (in invisible mode), after few seconds (it can take up to one minute, depending on connection speed), you will get a blank page. So the user is online!

Second Method: Voice Chat Method

Double Click on the user whose status you want to check.
Click on "Voice" icon on the toolbar, or select "Contact" menu and select "Enable Voice Chat" .
The deciding part... there are 2 possible results:

a) If the user is offline, you will get this message: "Internal server error. Cannot obtain voice token to start voice chat."

b) If the user is invisible (actually online), you will see the Voice Toolbar.

Third Method: Conference Invitation

Right Click on the user whose status you want to check.
When the menu appears, select Invite to Conference.
A window will appear. See at the right pane, the username you selected will be there. Now, click Invite.
The deciding part... there are 2 possible results:

a) If the user is offline, you will get this message: "None of the users in the invite list are available to join the conference. Please try at a later time."

b) If the user is invisible, you will get a window similar saying: "You are now logged into voice conference - (yahoo! id)"

Fourth Method: Buddy Spy 2.2.9

Get Buddy Spy from www.buddy-spy.com
Go to configure and enter your login details.
Now go to Buddy Spy option and enter the username you want to track. You can also check multiple ids also.
Not only Buddy Spy tells the status of Chat but also Room Chat and WebCamera status of that user also!
You can edit other options through Scan Options menu.

Both Google and Writely confirms this on their respective blog.

Writely which allows users to store and work with text documents on the Web is still in it's beta. Right now, the new registration are not being accepted as the site is being transfered to Google servers. Let's wait and watch what more Google will add more to writely.

This is new and aggressive Firefox support campaign. Kill Bill's Browser and Explorer Destroyer are two web sites started by a Massachusetts based group of four friends and full-time political activists to spread Firefox in a new and innovative way.

According to them there are 13 reasons you should shift to Firefox from
Internet Explorer like:

-> You'll only see porn when you want to.
-> Mozilla has never made a talking paperclip.
-> Your computer won't spend its free time telling the world
about Viagra soft tabs.

There are 3 types of levels to support this campaign to encourage people
to download Firefox.

You can place an ad on your site to download Firefox through your referral and
you would get $1. But, you wont get a Firefox tab in your adsense account if
you are outside united states :-(.

Anyway, I will support this campaign and configure it on my blog very soon.

gOffice is here but it's not from Google. gOffice is a free web based Office suite which has Word processor, desktop publishing, presentation and spreadsheet. However, Presentation and Spreadsheet are in the developement mode.

The best part of the suite is, after creating a document it directly exports it in PDF and you can save it on your computer. Earlier, I was using Writley but it does not exports your documents in PDF. Moreover, it has only word proccessing.

Under the agreement, Microsoft's MSN Messenger users will be able to exchange messages and voice call over the Internet with Yahoo Messenger subscribers starting in the second quarter of 2006.

Microsoft and yahoo will create a combined community of 275 million users will give the Google and AOl a tough fight. AOL is currently the market leader in the instant messaging space with a share of 56 percent.

If you store all the spams and all the useless forwards you get from
your friends, I don't think you need more than 2GB. But wait, there are

30gigs is the e-mail service provider which boasts of providing 30 GB of e-mail space for free. But it is invite only e-mail service same as Gmail.

Mailnation is an e-mail service provider, which is providing 1 TB (yes, 1024GB) of space, almost 400 times greater than Gmail. The best part is, it is not invite only ;-)

But, I suspect will these services survive for long? What will happen if they close down their service one fine day and all your e-mails are gone. Let's wait and watch!

This was the reaction I used to get in my office when talking about blogs.
Now, I must mention this, we work in a BPO ( No. 1 BPO to be precise ) for
a Technical process. Some of my collegues are MCAs, MCSEs, CCNAs or even
B.Techs and they dont know what a blog is. Anyway, Whenever they asked the question
what is blog? I used to say just one thing
click on this link.

And then people started calling me blogger. Although, I am a kid in the
blogosphere ;). But there are people in my office who say that Blog is
a personal diary, nothing more than that. Anyway, I dont care.. but I can
remember few lines of Mahatma Gandhi:

First they ignore you...,
Then they laugh at you...,
Then they fight you...,
Then you WIN.

And I feel somewhat happy to announce that 4 of my collegues have their blogs now and another 3 are planning to blog soon. So, Gandhi ji is right once again.

Some days back I read a post on Chirayu's Blog about city of choice whether Pune or Bangalore. Today, on Rediff I saw an article "Is the Bangalore story over". The article has the views of Subroto Bagchi Chief Operating Officer, MindTree Consulting and T V Mohandas Pai [CFO], Infosys Technologies and both are concerned about the Bangalore.

The favorite cities of MNCs in India are: (in no particular order)

1. Hydrabad
2. Banglore
3. Chandigarh
4. Gurgaon/Noida
5. Pune

I don't know about Hydrabad and Bangalore but I know Chandigarh is a better place than Gurgaon or Noida. If you wish to know about the Pune then better read the Chirayu's post.

Since one week it was Google Talk, Now, it's Gmail. Today when trying logging into my Gmail account, this error page appeared and after trying thrice, I was able to connect to Gmail.

I am trying to connect to Google Talk since one week but no luck ( Anil is also facing the same problem). I was able to connect on the very first day but after that no luck and today its Gmail. I don't think this is the same Google we all know. Now, one thing disturbing my mind, Is Google really God?

Microsoft releases WinFS Beta

Microsoft today released the beta version of WinFS (Windows File System). WinFS, which was originally scheduled to be released with Windows Longhorn (Vista) was pulled from the forthcoming release last year.

Microsoft is adding support for Windows XP with Service Pack 2 (SP2) for WinFS. Indeed, Beta 1 only works on XP. When installed, you see a new top-level object in My Computer called WinFS Stores. Change the font size - While holding the control key, move the scrollwheel on your mouse either up or down. This trick works while being focused in either the read or write area.

Insert linebreaks - If you want to have a message that spans multiple paragraphs, just hold shift and hit enter. You can add as many new lines as you want to create.

Style text - Also noted by a GoogleRumors commenter, you can make text either bold or italic by surrounding it with * or _. (Example: _this_ is italic.)

Switch windows - Hitting tab will cycle through open windows. It will select minimized conversations, to expand them just hit enter. If you just want to cycle through IMs and don’t care about the buddy list, control-tab will do that and will automatically expand a minimized conversation if you settle on one.

The show was about the GK of our great (?) Indian Leaders who do not know the difference between the Rashtra Gaan the National Anthem and Rashtriya Geet the national song . The leaders who were interviewd were from SP, RJD and even from BJP. And not to mention, no one passed the test.

One of the products in Yahoo's beta is Content Match, which allows publishers to place contextually relevant listings on their sites and receive a part of the revenue generated by them. Another feature, "Add to My Yahoo," is designed to let them promote and distribute their content on Yahoo via RSS (Really Simple Syndication) to drive traffic to their sites.

Salman, Sushmita, Arshad and specially Rajpal has done a good job. I m not talking about Katrina, she still need to learn acting.
Just chill is nice to see.

The new domain will be managed by a holding company,

First things first: The film didn't dissapoint me :-)
Now the bad one: I missed Dus bahane :-( because I reached late and bought the ticket in black ;-(

Dus, the film by Anubhav Sinha, is a good movie to watch. Sanjay Dutt and Abhishek Bachchan are looking good. The technique and sounds are good of the film. The actors are looking stunning in Black and action don't have words to descibe that this action is there in Indian film. The best part of the film is Pankaj Kapoor!

Film doesn't have even one scene where story stops or you have time to think.
Females are just fillers in the film as most of the action movies, however, Shilpa has a good role.

The climax is lengthy and is not tight as the film but from my side THREE STAR to DUS
I think its true tribute to Mukul Anand who were directing this film earlier.

The sweet Paheli

Watched Paheli today. It is light n sweet cinema of Amol palekar. SRK once again cast the magic, this time with mustaches. This paheli is all about the dilemma of choosing between a Ghost who is very romantic and a man who runs after the money.

This ghost is different than Ram Gopal verma's Bhoot or Kaal's kaali. This bhoot does not scare or kill anybody. This bhoot loves the the persons and helps other because it is Amol palekar kind of cinema.

The sets and costumes are very vibrant and colorful which have the true essence of Rajasthan. The acting of Rani is gr8 as usual, she looks fabulous in traditional dresses and Tanishq Jewellery.

Amitabh has the little but impressive appearance in the climax of the film and not to mention that this film has also happy ending like all the fairy tales.
I give three stars to the film.

Go and see the fairy tale....... :-))

I am back from after a 5 days trip from Vaishno Devi. It was very good trip and visited a lot of temples in Jammu and not to mention the main temple of Vaishno Devi. It was around 24 KM. walk upto the main temple. I haven't seen so many temples in a day in my entire life. Anyway, it was nice experience.

This is the text of the Commencement address by Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple Computer and of Pixar Animation Studios, delivered on June 12, 2005.

I am honored to be with you today at your commencement from one of the finest universities in the world. I never graduated from college. Truth be told, this is the closest I've ever gotten to a college graduation. Today I want to tell you three stories from my life. That's it. No big deal. Just three stories.

The first story is about connecting the dots.

I dropped out of Reed College after the first 6 months, but then stayed around as a drop-in for another 18 months or so before I really quit. So why did I drop out?
It started before I was born. My biological mother was a young, unwed college graduate student, and she decided to put me up for adoption. She felt very strongly that I should be adopted by college graduates, so everything was all set for me to be adopted at birth by a lawyer and his wife. Except that when I popped out they decided at the last minute that they really wanted a girl. So my parents, who were on a waiting list, got a call in the middle of the night asking: "We have an unexpected baby boy; do you want him?" They said: "Of course." My biological mother later found out that my mother had never graduated from college and that my father had never graduated from high school. She refused to sign the final adoption papers. She only relented a few months later when my parents promised that I would someday go to college.
And 17 years later I did go to college. But I naively chose a college that was almost as expensive as Stanford, and all of my working-class parents' savings were being spent on my college tuition. After six months, I couldn't see the value in it. I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life and no idea how college was going to help me figure it out. And here I was spending all of the money my parents had saved their entire life. So I decided to drop out and trust that it would all work out OK. It was pretty scary at the time, but looking back it was one of the best decisions I ever made. The minute I dropped out I could stop taking the required classes that didn't interest me, and begin dropping in on the ones that looked interesting.
It wasn't all romantic. I didn't have a dorm room, so I slept on the floor in friends' rooms, I returned coke bottles for the 5¢ deposits to buy food with, and I would walk the 7 miles across town every Sunday night to get one good meal a week at the Hare Krishna temple. I loved it. And much of what I stumbled into by following my curiosity and intuition turned out to be priceless later on. Let me give you one example:
Reed College at that time offered perhaps the best calligraphy instruction in the country. Throughout the campus every poster, every label on every drawer, was beautifully hand calligraphed. Because I had dropped out and didn't have to take the normal classes, I decided to take a calligraphy class to learn how to do this. I learned about serif and san serif typefaces, about varying the amount of space between different letter combinations, about what makes great typography great. It was beautiful, historical, artistically subtle in a way that science can't capture, and I found it fascinating.
None of this had even a hope of any practical application in my life. But ten years later, when we were designing the first Macintosh computer, it all came back to me. And we designed it all into the Mac. It was the first computer with beautiful typography. If I had never dropped in on that single course in college, the Mac would have never had multiple typefaces or proportionally spaced fonts. And since Windows just copied the Mac, its likely that no personal computer would have them. If I had never dropped out, I would have never dropped in on this calligraphy class, and personal computers might not have the wonderful typography that they do. Of course it was impossible to connect the dots looking forward when I was in college. But it was very, very clear looking backwards ten years later.
Again, you can't connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something - your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life.

My second story is about love and loss.

I was lucky - I found what I loved to do early in life. Woz and I started Apple in my parents garage when I was 20. We worked hard, and in 10 years Apple had grown from just the two of us in a garage into a $2 billion company with over 4000 employees. We had just released our finest creation - the Macintosh - a year earlier, and I had just turned 30. And then I got fired. How can you get fired from a company you started? Well, as Apple grew we hired someone who I thought was very talented to run the company with me, and for the first year or so things went well. But then our visions of the future began to diverge and eventually we had a falling out. When we did, our Board of Directors sided with him. So at 30 I was out. And very publicly out. What had been the focus of my entire adult life was gone, and it was devastating.
I really didn't know what to do for a few months. I felt that I had let the previous generation of entrepreneurs down - that I had dropped the baton as it was being passed to me. I met with David Packard and Bob Noyce and tried to apologize for screwing up so badly. I was a very public failure, and I even thought about running away from the valley. But something slowly began to dawn on me - I still loved what I did. The turn of events at Apple had not changed that one bit. I had been rejected, but I was still in love. And so I decided to start over.
I didn't see it then, but it turned out that getting fired from Apple was the best thing that could have ever happened to me. The heaviness of being successful was replaced by the lightness of being a beginner again, less sure about everything. It freed me to enter one of the most creative periods of my life.
During the next five years, I started a company named NeXT, another company named Pixar, and fell in love with an amazing woman who would become my wife. Pixar went on to create the worlds first computer animated feature film, Toy Story, and is now the most successful animation studio in the world. In a remarkable turn of events, Apple bought NeXT, I retuned to Apple, and the technology we developed at NeXT is at the heart of Apple's current renaissance. And Laurene and I have a wonderful family together.
I'm pretty sure none of this would have happened if I hadn't been fired from Apple. It was awful tasting medicine, but I guess the patient needed it. Sometimes life hits you in the head with a brick. Don't lose faith. I'm convinced that the only thing that kept me going was that I loved what I did. You've got to find what you love. And that is as true for your work as it is for your lovers. Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven't found it yet, keep looking. Don't settle. As with all matters of the heart, you'll know when you find it. And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on. So keep looking until you find it. Don't settle.

My third story is about death.

When I was 17, I read a quote that went something like: "If you live each day as if it was your last, someday you'll most certainly be right." It made an impression on me, and since then, for the past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: "If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?" And whenever the answer has been "No" for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something.
Remembering that I'll be dead soon is the most important tool I've ever encountered to help me make the big choices in life. Because almost everything - all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure - these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important. Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart.
About a year ago I was diagnosed with cancer. I had a scan at 7:30 in the morning, and it clearly showed a tumor on my pancreas. I didn't even know what a pancreas was. The doctors told me this was almost certainly a type of cancer that is incurable, and that I should expect to live no longer than three to six months. My doctor advised me to go home and get my affairs in order, which is doctor's code for prepare to die. It means to try to tell your kids everything you thought you'd have the next 10 years to tell them in just a few months. It means to make sure everything is buttoned up so that it will be as easy as possible for your family. It means to say your goodbyes.
I lived with that diagnosis all day. Later that evening I had a biopsy, where they stuck an endoscope down my throat, through my stomach and into my intestines, put a needle into my pancreas and got a few cells from the tumor. I was sedated, but my wife, who was there, told me that when they viewed the cells under a microscope the doctors started crying because it turned out to be a very rare form of pancreatic cancer that is curable with surgery. I had the surgery and I'm fine now.
This was the closest I've been to facing death, and I hope its the closest I get for a few more decades. Having lived through it, I can now say this to you with a bit more certainty than when death was a useful but purely intellectual concept:
No one wants to die. Even people who want to go to heaven don't want to die to get there. And yet death is the destination we all share. No one has ever escaped it. And that is as it should be, because Death is very likely the single best invention of Life. It is Life's change agent. It clears out the old to make way for the new. Right now the new is you, but someday not too long from now, you will gradually become the old and be cleared away. Sorry to be so dramatic, but it is quite true.
Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma - which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of other's opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.
When I was young, there was an amazing publication called The Whole Earth Catalog, which was one of the bibles of my generation. It was created by a fellow named Stewart Brand not far from here in Menlo Park, and he brought it to life with his poetic touch. This was in the late 1960's, before personal computers and desktop publishing, so it was all made with typewriters, scissors, and polaroid cameras. It was sort of like Google in paperback form, 35 years before Google came along: it was idealistic, and overflowing with neat tools and great notions.
Stewart and his team put out several issues of The Whole Earth Catalog, and then when it had run its course, they put out a final issue. It was the mid-1970s, and I was your age. On the back cover of their final issue was a photograph of an early morning country road, the kind you might find yourself hitchhiking on if you were so adventurous. Beneath it were the words: "Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish." It was their farewell message as they signed off. Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish. And I have always wished that for myself. And now, as you graduate to begin anew, I wish that for you.
Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish.
